Barilla foundation announces 10 finalists in pro-earth prize

Ten finalists have been been selected from hundreds of ideas pouring in from 20 countries proposing new sustainable solutions for food and water security, the Italian foundation that organized the contest announced Friday.
The third edition of Young Earth Solutions! (YES!), organized by the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition Foundation (BCFN), marked the first time entries were attracted from five continents.
The project finalists were selected by a jury of experts chosen by BCFN and its advisory board.
BCFN aims to promote the ideas of young talented people on urgent themes for society and the earth through its international tender YES!.
The 2014 edition of YES! called for ideas relating only to the Milan Protocol (www.protocollodimilano.it). An initiative of the BCFN, the Milan Protocol has the goal of promoting wider awareness and culture for the importance of sustainability and food access, directing proposals toward three major objectives to coincide with the food-themed Milan Expo 2015. The first is to tackle food waste setting the goal of halving by 2020 the impressive figure of 1.3 billion tons of chucked nutrients in the world. This is to be accomplished through targeted campaigns and long term agreements that engage the entire food chain. The second goal is agricultural reform and a fight against financial speculation to promote more sustainable farming, through limits on prices for raw materials for food-based biofuels. The third aim is to tackle obesity by promoting nutritional education in children and adults as well as healthy lifestyles.
About 40% of the project entries for YES! concerned promotion of healthy lifestyles; 33% concerned food waste; and 27% dealt with sustainable agriculture. The ten best projects selected by the jury will be presented at the 6th International Forum on Food and Nutrition, which takes place December 3-4, at Bocconi University in Milan. The winner will receive 10,000 euros as support to carry out their idea.
Along with the ten finalists, another 20 projects are competing for the Best on the Web prize, which will be awarded on the basis of an online vote at www.bcfnyes.com.
